Best Muslim Environment & Climate Charities

An emerging category — Muslim-led environmental and climate organizations are a small but growing field. Scholarly work on Islamic environmental ethics is well-established; organizational infrastructure is still being built.

Frequently asked questions

Is climate work zakat-eligible?
Generally no under the majority scholarly view — environmental work is indirect and doesn't reach individual beneficiaries. Sadaqah is the appropriate form of giving.
How do we evaluate climate organizations?
Concrete projects over conceptual advocacy, measurable carbon or ecosystem outcomes, and avoidance of greenwashing. Small-scale organizations with demonstrated project work score higher than large ones with vague messaging.
Why is this a separate category?
Climate and environmental work has distinct evaluation criteria and distinct theological framing in the Islamic tradition. Rolling it into general advocacy would lose both.
What's the relationship to humanitarian work?
Climate-caused humanitarian crises (drought, displacement) are addressed by humanitarian charities in the response phase. This category covers mitigation and advocacy, not disaster response.
